Before I begin
admiring Android as mobile OS, the universal fact is that desktop
computers are not going to dead any time soon. No matter how many people
use Android powered phones and tablets, but most of them cannot deny
from the fact that they also depend on desktop computers. Of course,
there is nothing wrong in using two different platforms, powered by two
different operating systems. But what if Android is available on desktop
computers too? Well, this is going to happen in future. The chip giant
Intel has officially confirmed that Android notebooks will be available
in stores in the future with prices starting at around the $200 mark.
For so long, mobile and PC manufacturers want an operating system, which apart from mobile or tablet devices, can also run on personal computers. Android fits both platforms. However, the question must be raised that can Android really power desktop computers?
Android is the only mobile OS, which can also be implemented as a desktop OS. iOS simply cannot be used for desktop; at least not with the currently available form. It lacks for multi-user and multi-task supports. Two other leading mobile operating systems are BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone. So, these two cannot also be used as fully-functional operating systems for desktop computers. Now, what left is Android and it in fact lives up to the expectations of device manufacturers and end-users. It is only Android, which can make move for the desktop too.
How Android is also suitable for Desktop computers.
The User Interface
It is safe to say that Android was designed for touch-screen, not for mouse or track-pad. But, with little improvement in the UI, the OS can totally support regular desktop operations. However, Android can still support physical keyboard, mouse, touchpad, and track-pad, but all it needs is a desktop level improvement in its user interface.
Google Docs and Google Drive
Google has its own cloud software for document creation. It is known as Google Docs, which includes Document, Spreadsheet, Presentation, Form and Drawing applications. Google Docs is also accessible on Android devices. The software suite saves all your files to Drive, which is Google's cloud service for file storage. Also, Drive is now the home of Google Docs. So these two products work together and make Android suitable for desktop level document creation tasks, which happen in almost all organizations over the world.
When you use Google Drive (the home of Google Docs), you are able to create, edit, store, and share the documents of all popular formats from a single software platform. The facility of the cloud storage is a plus point.
And if you are still in deep love with Microsoft Office applications, there are rumors suggesting that Microsoft is working on mobile versions of Microsoft Office Suite. An article of International Business Times with the title "Microsoft Office App For iPhone, iPad And Android Release Date Finally Arriving In 2014?" covers the full story.
Google Chrome Browser
Now Google Chrome browser is also available for latest Android OS versions. It has matured as lightweight, fast browsing alternative for most browsers. Besides Windows desktops and Android phones, Chrome is also available for iOS and Mac. It offers a complete range of modern browsing conveniences. It offers all the features such as tabbed browsing, new windows creation, private browsing mode, multi-user browsing, etc. An article of Cnet with the title "Google Chrome" gives full information on features and support of Chrome.
Android apps
All Android powered desktop computers will also be able to access Google Play and download apps. Android applications are available for any operation you think a mobile device or PC can perform. Apart from Google Docs and Chrome, users have applications for almost all purposes. If you want to edit images on Android device, you have Adobe® Photoshop® Touch and Adobe Photoshop Express. If you want to edit music files, you have tens of applications. If you want to edit videos, there are already some decent apps in Play Store. The only missing thing is capacity of these applications to handle desktop level operations. However, with the arrival of Android on desktop computers, Android developers are supposed to improve or enhance their applications for desktop devices.
There are already hundreds of thousands of gaming apps available in Google Play Store. Big gaming application development companies, such as EA, Sony, Konami, Ubisoft, Gameloft, etc, have already began to build for Android devices.
Android developer
Android as desktop operating system is going to be advantageous for Android developers too. It is because their apps cannot attract those users who do not like mobile applications. For example, many people do not feel excited when they play game on smartphone, but PC games still excite them. Now, Android gaming apps can also run on desktop computers.
Wrap up
Android is certainly capable of being a desktop operating system; however, the big question is whether anybody would be interested in this or not.
