Many average computer users do not even know that computer maintenance even exists. People often just continue to use their computer until it slows and then comes to a screeching halt. When you are using a computer at home, it is imperative that you perform computer maintenance. It is not hard to do for the average PC user and therefore there is no excuse on why you are
neglecting these jobs.

Home Computer maintenance steps
Below I will list a few computer maintenance steps that you can perform on your home computer. Firstly I would like to mention that there are two types of computer maintenance. One is the internal maintenance of a computer, which is the brain, and the other is the external maintenance.
Let's start with internal maintenance
1. Remove all unwanted and unused programs. In the Windows Control Panel you will find the "add or remove" icon for Windows XP or the "programs" icon for Windows Vista and Windows 7.
2. Remove all files that you know you created and do not want any longer. Do not delete files that you did not create.
3. Backup files that you do want to keep on an external hard drive. External hard drives are very cheap to buy now days and there is no excuse that you have not backed up your files.
4. Remove hidden files such as temporary Internet files and so on. If you have Windows you can use disk cleanup to do it. You will find this program in your start menu> accessoriesfolder> system tools> disk cleanup.
5. Defragment your files to get them organized in the right position on your hard drive. You will find this program in your start menu> accessories folder> system tools> disk defragmenter.
6. Update programs that need you to be updated. Also make sure the your antivirus software and your Windows is always updated. In theory, you should be left with a computer with no files cluttering it up at all. The files should also now be or organized and programs should open faster.
External maintenance
The main part of external computer maintenance is that you will have to you open the computer case and clean the dust from inside. Now this is usually done by a professional because it is possible that you can damage the components inside your computer. What happens is that the components can get damaged by static electricity transferred from your body. The "backyard" or "bushy techs" way of surpassing this problem is to touch the internal part of the computer case, the metal part, to release the static electricity held by the body. If you went to touch a computer component first then you would release the static electricity into that. To get rid of the dust from inside a computer it is best to use a compressor to blow air onto the computer. It is also best for that compressor to have a rubber nozzle, just in case you touch anything. This is only to perform computer maintenance so you really do not need to remove parts.
